CRITICAL THINKING

a. Some business houses, shops and department stores in city areas have started to adopt QR code payment systems in Nepal, too. What should be done to make it more accessible? Discuss.

Answer:

At present, the QR code payment system is one of the most popular payment systems in the world. In our country, Nepal, too, we find the usage of this payment system in different places. In the present time, this system has been used by most merchants as well as customers.

In the present time, most traders, such as business houses, department stores, restaurants, local vendors, etc., are easily accepting QR code payment systems. Most consumers find this payment system to be the easiest way to transact.

In the past, various things were shared to make transactions. Presently, payment can be made through a check, wire transfer, debit or credit card, or QR code. This type of payment system is very useful in a place where people are familiar with technology or the digital world; otherwise, it is a hassle. Although a large number of people in Nepal are unfamiliar with this payment system, some business houses, shops, and department stores in the cities have adopted this method of payment. There are many remote areas in our county, and people do not have access to the internet or technical knowledge.

To make the QR code payment system more accessible in Nepal, the following important things should be considered:

▪︎  There should be the availability of fast internet facilities to use this system.

▪︎  There should be technical knowledge among people regarding this digital payment system.

▪︎  The government should launch this payment system all over Nepal along with public awareness programmes.

▪︎  People should be taught about its safety and reliability.

b. The payments landscape is shifting gears from cash to digital mode. Digital payment brings ease and convenience to the consumer. Is it possible to apply such cashless methods in payments in Nepal? Discuss.

Answer:

In the past, most Nepali people believed in cash and checks for the payment system. Most people prefer to do business in cash rather than with checks. Gradually becoming acquainted with the digital world, easy access to the internet, and smartphones, most people in urban areas prefer to buy goods through the digital payment system. Instead of paying cash bills for services, goods, and utilities and investing in the stock market, they prefer to use digital wallets like Wallet, Esewa, MyShare, and Connect IPS. Most of the banks are also providing mobile banking and internet banking services to their customers at present. Thus, the payment landscape is shifting gears in digital mode. This digital mode of payment has made the payment system quite convenient and faster. In the past, people had to spend time and effort to pay in cash. They had to wait for their turn to pay utility bills like telephone, electricity, and water by visiting the counters. But in the present, paying bills in digital mode makes people's lives so easy. They can easily pay the bills in different sectors while sitting at home using their smartphones. People also pay school fees digitally nowadays. Consumers and merchants are feeling quite comfortable making payments and transactions in digital mode.

This method of payment is complicated, although it reduces our time. In terms of safety, this payment method is quite secure among all sorts of payment systems. In the world, we have even heard about hacking by the hackers in this payment system. In the context of Nepal, most people, as well as financial institutions, are unfamiliar with this mode of payment. Nepal is a less developed country where we cannot find proper internet access. This type of payment system needs high-speed internet. There is a lack of knowledge among people about using this payment system. To implement digital payment systems all over Nepal, it is very important to solve the above-mentioned problems regarding the digital mode of payment in Nepal.

Digital Payment Systems in Nepal

Kathmandu Post

2021-07-11

Digital trading, or payment, is a kind of payment where there is no use of physical exercise. This kind of payment system is completely different from the past payment system. In digital payments as well as transactions, consumers need not visit the bank or stand in a queue. Nowadays, due to the COVID-19 crisis, most people are interested in digital payment systems. Most people in the world are doing trade through the use of digital payment systems. In the context of Nepal too, this mode of payment system is getting more popular day by day. In this time of economic crisis, most people in Nepal are using this payment system in their daily lives. The interest of the public in this payment system has increased in Nepal. This payment system has gained popularity all over the world. Due to its growing popularity, the Nepal Rastriya Bank of Nepal has tried its best to boost the digital payment system all over the country.

The digital payment system in Nepal just started a few years ago. In Nepal, Nabil Bank was the first commercial bank that initially started the digital mode of business.

As per the existing digital payment policy, money will be transferred from one account of a bank or financial institution to another account of the same bank or financial institution under the authority of the NRB. Taxes, river fines, car fees, registration fees, and service fees paid to the appropriate government agency can be paid in many forms. Similar payments can be made for electricity and telecom services, as well as drinking water, insurance premiums, and social security allowances. Schools and colleges, hospitals, as well as air and ground transport services, as well as hotels and restaurants, charge their clients to pay bills and trade shares with registered securities brokers.

Digital commerce has also brought about a big change in Nepal. Doing business through this medium has saved time, reduced corruption, and curbed criminal activities. Digital technology can be used for cashless transactions to help the economy work more smoothly. Digital services like Branchless Financial Cura, POS Machine, Debit Credit Card, Smart Banking, and PhonePay provide secure banking transactions.
