The Colour Out of Space by H. P. Lovecraft
"The Colour Out of Space" is a science fiction as well as horror short story. It was written H. P. Lovecraft, an American author. It was written in March 1927. The narrator of the story is an unnamed person who discovers that a meteorite crashed in a part of the land just outside the city of Arkham many years ago. That meteorite poisoned every living being nearby. It affected lots of vegetation, animals and people. The major themes in the story are isolation, madness and the destructive effects of unchecked curiosity.
FULL PLOT SUMMARY
The Colour Out of Space by H. P. Lovecraft
The narrator of the story is an unnamed man who is a land surveyor by his profession. He is in his task of inspection. He is inspecting a part of the land just outside the city of Arkham. This particular land will be covered in water when they construct a new dam here. The narrator notices that something is very wrong with the particular area. The population of the area has been moving in and out for many years. There he discovers a person named Ammi who has lived there for forty years. He moves there to talk to him, even though the person seems quite strange. He takes his interview. After taking his interview, he gets the idea about various things. He goes back to work but decides to quit his job soon and move away. He also warns other people not to drink water from that dam.
Later, the narrator retells Ammi's story. Ammi and his wife used to live in the area. It was a time of busy farming in that place. One night, a meteorite hit the Gardner farm. It was the closest farm to Ammi, but still quite far away. Ammi and many others decided to move there. They wanted to see the meteorite to understand it better. The owner of the Gardner farm swore that it seemed like the meteorite was shrinking. But the professors from Arkham didn't believe his words. The professors took a sample of the soft, almost gooey meteorite. But, by the next day, it had completely disappeared.
Being excited, they returned to the place to do their further study about it. They continued to run their tests but couldn't get a proper idea regarding the meteorite. Every day, the meteorite kept on becoming smaller. But that rock gave off unearthly as well as weird light. After the disappearance of the meteorite, different strange things started at the Gardner farm. The farm's vegetables grew bigger but tasted awful. The animals' milk turned sour, and the people went crazy. Even though the well water turned so contaminated, people continued drinking it. For the next year, people stayed away from the area of Gardner. Their crops failed and the family members kept on getting sick.
Ammi often looked after them but was helpless to provide help to them. Eventually, after the mother and son passed away, the father was almost dead, and the other two children disappeared, Ammi reported to the police what happened. They, along with Ammi, went to the house. Ammi didn't want to go because he had seen strange and spooky things on the farm, especially at night. As they searched the place, they found parts of the father, the mother, and one of the children.
They finally decided to check the well. They found a lot of weird stuff in the well. They moved down into the well and found the remains of the two children and some other animals. As it got dark, a spooky light started to appear. The men went into the house for safety as the light got brighter and the horses they brought started behaving strangely. They saw strange things like trees moving without wind, and eventually, something came out of the well.
The men run away from the back of the house. They witnessed two weird-coloured things rising into the sky and finally disappearing. They were scared and surprised by what they saw and made their way home. Ammi was never the same after that. He thought that there was still a piece of the meteorite left making the land sick bit by bit until it was strong enough to move back to space.
